Michael Garrett
Senior Consultant and Executive Coach
Michael Garrett is a seasoned legal and business advisor with diverse global financial services, corporate, nonprofit and consulting experience. For four decades Michael has been a key participant in executive management's response to both crisis and opportunity. Now he focuses the insights gained in those arenas on empowering the business, professional and personal success of our executive coaching clients.
After earning his BA, MBA and JD degrees at Columbia University, Michael received his basic training in corporate and international legal practice as an associate with prominent law firms in New York City. He then served for many years as a partner and Associate General Counsel of Coopers & Lybrand with responsibility for human resource policies and claims; management and benefits consulting; enterprise and industry technology; intellectual property; professional practice problems; and diverse regulatory matters. Broadening the scope of his experience, he then became General Counsel of the global investments division of the Swiss Reinsurance Company.
In the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, Michael created, managed and grew one of the most successful nonprofit initiatives to benefit family survivors of the attack victims, The Gift of New York. When The Gift completed its planned two-year life, Michael joined a boutique management consulting firm advising large corporate, government and nonprofit clients in the areas of organizational alignment and effectiveness, strategic planning and cultural integration.
Most recently, Michael served as General Counsel in Residence of a 700-lawyer national law firm, advising the firm's attorneys and its clients' general counsels. The goal of Michael's work was to foster greater understanding between corporate general counsels and their outside law firms, which is particularly needed in the new era of Sarbanes-Oxley and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Outside of the office, for many years Michael sat on the Board of the Greater New York Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, and is a Life Trustee of the Berkeley-Carroll School. Michael is also a very active Columbia alumnus, serving as President of the Society of Columbia Graduates, a Director the Law School Association and of the Stephen Whitney Phoenix Society, and a Member of the Advisory Committee for the Columbia Libraries. He continues to serve as an Executive Mentor at Columbia Business School and has been named Mentor of the Year.
Michael and his wife live in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and in Southampton, New York, and are avid participants in the cultural life of New York City. Michael also finds time to devote to his favorite avocations: piano, photography, cabinetry, gardening and doting on his newly minted granddaughter, Jane.
